Silgan Closures Europe Acquire Portola
March 20, 2014
Portola Packaging, one of the leading suppliers of 5 gallon HOD closures, established in 1954, announced their successful acquisition by Silgan group, a leading global packaging company. Silgan was established even earlier in 1926, thus bringing together two companies with significant experience in the packaging industry.
Silgan have been a key contributor to the packaging of liquid food products since their creation, developing into a US$3.2B operation providing a wide ranging portfolio from metal cans and closures to blow-molded containers and jars as well as a portfolio of closures. By combining their skills with Portola’s injection expertise, it is anticipated this will further strengthen their collective closure capabilities and very importantly, further enhance their ability to deliver unparalleled service and technical support to customers.
The European business will continue to be led by the current Portola Managing Director, Glenn Heighington, who will be reporting to Matthias Loerincz, President of the newly formed Silgan Closures Europe. The Portola facilities located in the UK and Czech Republic, will form a key foundation for the plastic closure growth within Silgan Closures Europe, whilst the Portola product portfolio will now be better supported by an excellent infrastructure of sales and service locations as well as a state-of-the-art food standard laboratory based in Hannover.
As Portola have become synonymous in the HOD market following their rebranding from their Cap snap roots, it is anticipated Silgan Closures Europe will continue this tradition for many years to come as the next stage of the company’s development is undertaken.
