Greif wins 2011 Dupont Award for Packaging Innovation

October 12, 2011

Greif Inc. was honoured as a Gold winner in the 23rd edition of the DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation. DuPont's is the industry's longest-running, independently judged global award program for packaging materials, technology and service innovation. The 2011 program was centered on new developments, cost/waste reduction and improved sustainability.

Shanna Moore, sustainable packaging global director, DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers, declared that "The Packaging Awards program is an opportunity to celebrate how collaborating throughout the value chain can bring cost-effective innovation to the market to help solve the big issues". Moore also stressed the Agribusiness Virtuous Cycle with Greif's Cimplast operations in Brazil, which DuPont considers captures the spirit of innovation to solve global challenges, such as environmental caring.

Cimplast Embalagens, which is part of Greif Inc. since 2004, is settled on Latin America, where it produces plastic jerricans and bottles. The production process would have created a lot of plastic waste if they had not developed the “Agribusiness Virtous Cycle”. This full-cycle recycling system allows multilayer plastic agrochemical bottle waste to be remade into high-value products.

To turn the waste into automotive lubricant bottles, rigid pipes and other useful products, Cimplast uses a polymer compatibilizer created by DuPont: Fusabond®. Thanks to this engineering innovation, more than 150,000 tons of empty agrochemical plastic bottles have been collected since 2002, saving about 374,000 barrels of crude oil and more than 160,000 tons of CO2 equivalents.

And all this numbers, which represent energy saving and environmental care, are the best award for the Watercooler Industry, and they are the reason why these efforts must be supported and expanded.
